The name Baumgardner has been spelled many ways over the years. In this family tree I have tried to use the names as they were recorded at the time. It was often spelled the way it sounded to the one doing the recording and often they had little or no education and could not spell well.
The use of surnames began in the eleven hundredth century 100(encyclopedia Britannica). The name Baumgartner derived from the marriage of two families Baum and Gardt. (The encyclopedia of European Surnames). The practice was that the wife attached her name hyphenated first. Further the source indicates that the Baumgaratners were know as judges and glass makers. Later data shows wood workers (carpenters).
Source: Research by Amon "Jack" Baumgarten. The name ConradBaumgartaner was listed (year 1286) and Friedreich Baumgaratner (year 1385 in chronicles of German Surnames. "Wurttemburgishes Verkundenbuch" (The Historical Research Center), has Baumgaratner in 1520 went to Switzerland from Muhlberg, Germany. This may be the first known Baumgartner to appear in Switzerland.
Much of the information I have on the early Baumgaratners was dueto information generously given me by: Bonnie Baumgarner, Herb Bumgarner and others. I cannot thank them enough.
