NOTES FOR DAVID SPENCER BURDETT:
According to "An illustrated History of Union and WallowaCounties," Western Historical Publishing Company, 1902, a volume in the History of the State of Oregon and maintained in the reference library of LaGrande City Library, La Grande, Oregon, p. 575, David S. Burdett was one of the staunch builders of Wallowa County, a man of ;ability and native force of character that enabled him to overcome the obstacles of life's pathway. He was highly esteemed by his fellows, maintained a reputation untarnished and displayed sagacity and integrality in his eventful career. He moved from Ohio to Davis County, Iowa with his parents where he received his education in the common schools. He lift there in young adulthood and traveled to the Black Hills, spent a year in Nevada and settled in the Wallowa Valley 3.5 miles north of Joseph. He established a farm, raising the fruits of the field and handling stock. He was successful in his efforts in the industrial and business world and he was considered a prosperous and successful farmer. He was described as always manifesting a good interest in the welfare of the county and the affairs of government, displaying the characteristics of the loyal citizen, the substantial and worthy man, and the faithful actor in life's matters.
According to anecdotal family records, David was raised byneighbors after his parents died. They gave him a house and $100.00 when he turned 18 and he left to work in a gold mine.
In the original entries of land, Davis County, Iowa, 40 acres ofland were recorded under the name of David S. Burdett on November 14, 1853: SW 1/4 of SW 1/4 of 10-70-15. On the same date, Joseph Burdett's name was recorded on NN 1/4 of NE 1/4 of 155-70-15, 40 acres
Death record from a newspaper: Richard Harley Burdett diedSunday, aged six years and eleven months. Interment took place Tuesday in the Joseph Cemetery, Rev. F. G. Potter speaking appropiate words from the twelth chapter of Second Samuel, beginning with the eighteenth verse. Richard was the second son of D. S. Burdett and only son of Mrs. Anna Burdett, he having a son by a former wife. They are well known residents of the valley between Enterprise and Joseph. The cause of the boy's death was spasmodic croup. The parents have the sincere sympathy of the entire community..
