Many times through out the Baumgardner tree members dropped the"baum" and used B Gardner or just plain Gardner. George Baumgardner and his uncle Reese (may have been Jacob Ries, husband to Mary Elizabeth Baumgaradner) came to Ohio from Little York, Pennsylvania about 1810. George settled in Muskingum County near Zanesville. His uncle Reese settled in Rushville, Ohio. George Baumgardner fought in the war of 1812. Pension certificate# 16870. He served under captain Thomas Williams, Co O Militia. In 1871 he applied for and received a pension of $ 8.00 per month for this service to his country. We have the papers where he so applied. After the war of 1812 George married Miss Elizabeth (Betsy)Orster. Some marriage records show the date 6 Feb 1817. They moved to Huron County, Ohio where George worked at the cooper's trade which he had learned in his youth. In about 1815 they moved back to Muskingum County and he went towork for a Jim Granger at Moxahala. He wanted to farm and leased one hundred and seven acres for six years at the end of which he bought the property. He also bought one hundred and seventy acres south of this property and another tract of two hundred and twenty acres on the ridge road. He erected a brick home on this 220 acres on ridge road and lived there for 30 years until his death. His death was caused by a fall from an apple tree at age 76. Hedied five days later. His wife survived him until 1876. George and his wife Betsy are both buried in Springfield Chapel cemetery, Muskingum County, Ohio. He had been very successful in all his business affairs andmaking judicious investment of his capital in real estate, he held at the time of his death five hundred and forty acres of valuable land in Muskingum County, In all his business relations he was found thoroughly reliable and was never known to take advantage of the necessities of ;his fellow men in any trade transaction. His political allegiance was given to the Democratic party up tothe time of the Civil Was, when he became a stanch Republican. George had five sons and and four daughters, all of whom wereliving at the time of his death. Namely: George a resident of New Albany, Indiana. Jacob who lived in Springfield Township, Ohio.
