Individual Notes
The patronymics of James Hamblen, the immigrant ancestor who came toAmerica in the 17th century are not known. He is thought to be the brother of John Hamblen, who came to New England, and the son of Giles Hamblen (a Capt. Giles Hamblen came to Barnstable), also the grandson of John Hamblen, who resided in 1570 at Cornwall, England. Another consideration is that James may have been from the Parish of St. Lawrence, Reading, Berkshire, England. The assumed birthplace of James, as noted above is not conclusive. Itis possible he came from the Shire of Kent, near London, as were most of the early settlers of Barnstable whom he associated with. James probably sailed for America sometime before the spring of 1639, the time he makes his first appearance on New England records, living at Barnstable. At Barnstable, he was a member of the Rev. Lothrop's church who hadcome to Barnstable in October 1634. It may be that James went to Barnstable in the spring of this year, as did several others who joined his church. In 1639, James owned a home lot at Coggin's pond, and eight acres of land that bordered the Colony's Gov. Thomas Hinckley. In addition to this land, he is recorded as owning an additional 76 acres. James may have come to New England before his family, sending for themat a time when he had a home established. This was a very common practice among the earliest settlers. His first 2 children were almost certainly born in England. One source says at St. Lawrence Parish, Berkshire. If so, then we may presume that this is where he and his wife were living before immigrating. James Hamblen was not eminent in the public affairs of Barnstable, norwere his sons, however, at a much later date one of his descendants, a Mr. Hannibal Hamblin, became the Vice President of the United States under Lincoln. James Habblen took the oath of a freeman at Barnstable on 1 March 1647 and in 1643 was the town's constable. Between 1653 and 1654, James apparently bought 20 acre's of land fromMr. Groom, and built his new home on it. He probably wanted to change locations because of a highway that was built through his land. He and his family for the next four generations became very prolific in and around Barnstable, with most raising large families and repeatedly using the same names. Several of his children were baptized the same day they were born, which may be an indication of strong religious convictions. Possibly the birth event occurred on a Sunday, when the church was in session, or, the child may have been born sickly and he demanded this service.
