Individual Notes
Richard, Richards, or Richardson is a baptismal name, the son ofRichard, a name taken or created from a relationship. From an old German form we have Ric (h)ard, meaning strong, brave and powerful. From an old French version we have simply Richard or Ricard, It was an extremely popular among the feudial Barons of old England. Generally, records are silent about Thomas Richard prior to hisdeparture from England. He has from Pitminster, Somersetshire, England. He came to New England with the company of the Rev. John Warham, made up of people largely from the West Counties. They sailed from Plymouth Eng. on the vessel "Mary & John," that left England on the March 20, 1630, landing at Dorchester Neck, Massachusetts on May 30, 1630. This area is now a part of South Boston. The passenger manifest of the Mary & John show's that Thomas Richards was accompanied by his wife "Wealthian" and children; John, Thomas, Mary, Alice & Anna. A later publication, The Great Migration begins, states he migrated in 1633 and his first residence was at Dorchester. Toward the later part of 1630, Boston took a roll of its inhabitantswho brought with them, or, who had the right to possess Arms (Coat-of-Arms). Thomas Richards is on this list showing his insignia as: "Silver a fess of four lozenges gules between two lears sable." His wife Wealthian, also retained a seal, depicting a legal impression of her Loring family Coat-of-Arms. Thomas made three return trips to England, the first in 1640, again in 1646 and again about 1649. By 1635, most of Thomas's ship acquaintances, friends and perhaps oldneighbors, left Dorchester to begin the new settlement of Windsor on the upper Connecticut River. Dorchester records prior to 1637, show that he was a grantee of 12 Acres of meadow lands in Dorchester and further state that; "its granted to Mr. Richards to have 6 acres of land adjoyning to those fromerly owned." Thomas elected to remain at Dorchester for another year before he removed in 1637/9, to Weymouth, MA, a close by settlement where was admitted into the church just before May 13, 1640, the time he applied for freemanship. After moving from Dorchester, Thomas joined into a partnership withMr. Waldham in owning a gristmill. They were fined by the court on June 4, 1639, 5 shillings each and Mr. Waldham an extra £5 "for taking to much toll." This fine was levied because they had neglected to install the mill with the proper scales and weight's. William Crocker and Thomas Richards acted as witnesses to thenuncupative will of Daniel Standlake of Scituate, on January 27, 1639. We know that on May 30, 1640, he became a freeman at Weymouth, and the same year a selectman. He was a merchant of much respectability and held in high esteem in the colony, being dignified by the title of Mister. Thomas made out his will on October 17, 1650, at Hull, Massachusetts;"in the house of Thomas Loring, being sicke," naming his son John executor. As it happened, he died while son John was in England, so the court appointed his widow, Wealthian, in his place. It was proven on November 28, 1650, and the estate inventoried on December 11, 1650, for the amount of £1300. 17. 11. A second inventory was taken on March 10, 1651. After matters of the estate were finished, Wealthian moved to Boston where she was treated as one of society's aristocrats. She made out her will on July 3, 1679, which was very lengthy.
