Individual Notes
Bangs is an unusual surname - its origin or how it was constructed isuncertain. Possibly, it may have been taken from the Norman word 'baines,' meaning baths. The various New England spellings are: Bangs, Bannges, Banges, Banks, and as used hereafter, Bangs. It should be mentioned that many Colonial records spelled the name as; 'Banges,' also found used this way on several tombstones of Edward Bangs progeny. The crest used by John Bangs of London, is identical to that used bythe New England immigrant, Edward Bangs, the progenitor of this sketch. This coat-of-arms uses the pattern of the 'fleur-de-lis,' indicating it may have come from France. The earliest use of the name Bangs is recorded to a man named 'Mr. Augustine Bangs of Essex, England in 1395. Richard Bangs, the first of this line, became very prosperous in theTanning business, consequently he was called 'Mr.' and 'Gentleman.' He became a freeman in 1547, during the first year in the reign of King Edward VI. He sold large parcels of land at Norwichshire, both at St. Mary’s and St. Martin’s parish of this county, to Thomas Norforth for the large sum of £440. Richard Bangs was a tanner by trade and was made a freeman in 1547.
