James Matheny was born at Hope Plantation, Stafford County,Virginia. Removed to Loudoun County, Virginia where he married Diana Beasley, In 1789, he moved (with his family) from Loudoun County, Virginia, over the Mountains into Kaintuck Territory (now a part of Kentucky). Later, his sons migrated to different sections of the country; James going to Pennsylvania, Elijah to Tennessee, Daniel to the Carolinas, Charles R. (who became a Methodist Missionary) went to the Northwest Territory (Illinois) settling first at Lebanon. It will be noted that James fathered eight children by his first wife and also eight children by his second wife. It is said that he lived near Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky> The majority of the Mathenys in America today can be traced back to James, William and Daniel.
