BUCHMANN - BOOKMAN
As given to me by other family members: Mygreat-great-great-grandparents came to America in the early 1830's. The Buchmann family from Braden Germany, and the Martzolff family from Alsace-Lorraine came on the same ship, Oxford. They left their homelands in protest against the elections that had been declared illegal; restricted suffrage to rich landowners, suspension of the liberty of the press, and compulsory military training. The Buchmann's brought their three sons and a daughter. The daughter died at sea. The boys separated after landing in New York Harbor. George came to Ohio with the Martzolff family and later married their daughter, Margaret. She was a soloist in St. John's Lutheran Church. Their children were Jacob, Callie, George, Fred, Magdeline, Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine, Anna, and William. Margaret and George are buried in St. John's Cemetery.
Some of their children changed the spelling of their name to theAmerican sounding BOOKMAN, Mary moved to Wyoming and the others settled in Perry and surrounding countied.
Great grandfather William Buchmann (Bookman) married Ida Evansand their children were Grace, Hazel, Clarence, Gladys, Harry, Etta, Charles, Anna, Willard, Mabel, George, and Mildred.
Grandfather Charles Bookman (Buchmann) married Anna Andrews andtheir children were Beatrice, Harold, Lyndell, Arvon, and Eileen. Anna died of peritonitis from a ruptured appendix when Eileen was a baby. Lather, Charles married Olive Sines and their children were Frances, Louise, Betty, William, Harry, Alfred, Wilma, Paul David, Dale, and Ronald.
My mother, Beatarice, married Eugene O. Rarick whose parents wereGeorge and Charlotte "Tillie" Saffell Rarick from Junction City. Eugene's siblings were William "Spike"' Ed, Veron "Buddy", Charles "Brownie", Dora "Dode", Carlyle "Seff", and Leo. Leo was known as "Big Ick" and Gene was "Little Ick". Gene's grandparents were Samuel and Rebecca Mills Saffell, and William and Polly Bowman Rarick.
Bea and Gene reared their children in Junction City. Their namesare Doris (that's me), Barbara, and Robert. Bea survived a nearly ruptured appendix when Robert was quite young. Perhaps these health related tales stimulated my interest to be a registered nurse for the past thirty-two years.
My husband, Robert L. Greene, and I were blessed with four sons:Richard, Steven, Thomas, and Timothy, and now, the joys of our life are six wonderful grandchildren - Daniel, Donald, Corey, Stacie, Brian, and Brianne. We live in Columbus, Ohio but my thoughts often return to the proud, hardworking folks of Perry County and southeastern Ohio.
