Individual Notes
Hi Keith the following came from Dennis Stokes who is a member of our localhistory soc The name BOTLEY was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 asBOTELIE. There have been various spellings of the name in medieval timesincluding, Botleia (1195), Botlegh (1236), Bottelye (13th C.) (Hampshire PlaceNames by J.E.B.Gover) Ley, lee, leah or lea is defined as grassland but quite often arableland newly laid for pasture and then ploughed up again (The LocalHistorian's Encyclopedia.) Also, leigh, ley or leah can be a glade or forestclearing (Grigson's Shell Country Alphabet,). Botta was thought to be a person. Thus Botley is probably derivedfrom Botta's land or Botta's clearing in the forest. Gover's book above speculates 'Botta's wood or clearing. Hopes this helps Colin colin.mercer@botley.com Shapwick Brook Lane Botley Hants SO30 2ER UK (44) 1489 784246 Hi Keith the following came from Dennis Stokes who is a member of our localhistory soc The name BOTLEY was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 asBOTELIE.
