Linnell is a baptismal name, taken probably from the son of Lionell. It is found on several records spelled as: Linett, Linnet, Lynnell, Lyonell, Linell Linnel, and as spelled in this sketch, Linnell. The English ancestry or family seat of Robert Linnell is not known. He is said to have migrated from London, Middlesex County, but this may have just been his port of debarkation. When Robert decided to leave England, he had already attained the ageof about fifty-four (54). His profession is not known but like most pioneers he was or became a farmer. His wife Jemima has been mistakenly called Pinniah by some early genealogists Upon his arrival to America in 1638, Robert settled first at ScituateMassachusetts. On September 16 of this same year, he and his wife were admitted into the church there. He had carried with him from London, a letter of reference, stating that he and his wife had been dismissed from the congregational church of London, being in good standing. The Reverend John Lothrop of this church seems to have been his brother-in-law. The following year, 1639, Robert removed to Barnstable, where recordslist him as a proprietor on Jan. 22, 1638/9 from a land grant giving him land at Sippicon. Within one month, on Feb. 1 1638/9 he is listed as a Barnstable freeman. By 1640, Robert had built a permanent house at Barnstable, located between Cogan's Pond and the present day Court House. Colony records carry Robert Linnet's name with the prefix "Mr." whichwould indicate that he was a man of some worth or means. He owned approximate 78 acres of land in Massachusetts at the time of his death but was not considered very affluent. Robert was not a wealthy man when he died-his estate, including livestock, were valued at £55. There is much ambiguity about Roberts's wife's, at least his firstwife, who may have died soon after their arrival in N.E. However, Considering the time line between his daughter Sarah (1607) and his child, son David (1627), cannot we assume that he married his second wife during this lapse of time. It is known that he married a woman named "Jemima," (possibly surname Howse) and by her had a daughter, Bethia and possibly a son, Shubael. Considering that his first child Sarah was born circa 1605, we may assume that his wife at that time was more or less 20 years of age. If she were the mother of his last born, (born 1640) she would have conceived at around the age of 60, which is very unlikely. This leaves little doubt and several circumstances make it plausible that he was married twice. Thomas drew up a will before his estate was inventoried on 12 March1662/3. At this time the clerk (in spelling his wife's name) made the following entry: "Pinninah Linell was Deposed to the truth of this Inventory before mee Thomas Hinckley: this 12th of March 1662/1663."
