Story told by Wirley Adams Vickers about the death of his parents andbrother. "When I was nine years old, I came home from school one day tofind a band of guerillas there> I think they were called "Carpet-Baggers." They hung my parents right before their children's eyes and were setting the house of fire. We children ran screaming in all directions, and I became separated from by brothers and sisters. I had a sister named Sue and two brothers, Wash and Quill. I ran and ran until I became exhausted. I found myself in the woods and I cried myself to sleep. When I awakened I was in a cabin with an elderly bachelor named Jake. I never knew his last name. I lived with him until he died and then I had to shift for myself. I had never gone back to school. I worked in cotton fields, tobacco fields and lumber camps. Or I took work where ever I could find it. Before I married I tried to find my sister and brothers, butwithout any luck. Years later, after I had married and was living in South Dakota, I took an excursion trip to Texas. There was a man on the train from Versailles, Missouri. I told him about my family, and he said that he had known Sue, Wash and Quill. She had married a man with the name Wilson. Wash had moved to the state of Washington, but he was not sure about Quill. He said when he returned home he would try to find Sue, and would tell her to write to me. Sometime later I received a letter from her which Annie answered. We received another letter which Annie again answered, but that letter came back and the correspondence ended."
