Rev. Eli Lewman was born in Allegheny County, Maryland, near the cityof Cumberland. He died in the triumphs of Christian faith at his home in Zanesville, Ohio, at the age of 83 years, 10 months, and 1 day. He came to Ohio in 1838, and settled in Bridgeport, Belmont County. There he married Sarah Ellen Taylor. Brother Looman was converted Methodist Protestant Church of that city. He was licensed to preach in 1860, and was received into the Muskingum Annual Conference at its session in Fredericktown, Ohio in 1864. He served the following charges, Pleasant Grove, Woodsfield, Graysville, Pennsville, California, Columbia, Lookout, Pisgah, Union and Belmont, the years 1864 to 1891. At the conference of 1891, Newconerstown, he was granted a superannuated relation at his own request and from that time he suntanned that relation until he joined the church triumphant! Funeral services were held in the Methodist Protestant Church, Pennsville. In his death the Muskingum Conference has lost one of its oldest, most successful, highly reapedted and universally beloved ministers of the gospel of Christ. When such a man dies, he is not lost to the home, community, church and the world entirely. He rists from his labors, but his works do follow him. His life, his labors, his influence and his character will go on blessing the church and the world and all who knew him. We shall miss him, but we may meet him again. "from church publication." There is a small chapel built in his honor, about 10 miles south of Jackson, Ohio on route 776 (NE of Stockdale). Looman Chapel is located across the broadband from the Scioto Elementary School, built in 1870. |
